CMS Routes UC Santa Cruz 8-1 at home

CMS Women’s Tennis defeated UC Santa Cruz 8-1 in a home match
on Saturday. With decisive victories from #2 doubles (Elisa
La Cava/ Sara Reed) and #3 doubles (Alle Hsu/ Caroline Daly), the
Athenas moved to a 2-1 lead going into singles.
Sara Reed, Alle Hsu, and Meredith Leyendecker coasted to singles
wins at the #4, #5, and #6 positions, respectively, yielding only a
total of 8 games between the three of them. Hannah Kornfeld
followed with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 singles victory at #4.
Team captains and seniors Jessica Fox and Elisa La Cava each
dropped their first sets but battled back to victory. At the
#1 position, La Cava dropped the first set in a 6-8 tiebreaker
despite a 6-3 tiebreaker lead, but found her rhythm in the second
set and match-determining super tiebreaker, dropping only 1 game
and four points. Jessica Fox at the #2 position persevered
through a 5-7 first set loss to answer with a 6-4 second set
win. She sealed off the singles sweep with a super tiebreaker
victory of 11-9.
The Athenas move to 5-2 overall as they look forward to home
matches with Hardin Simmons (March 8, 12 noon) and U. T. Tyler
(March 11, 2 PM).
