Athenas Win Close Game In Overtime

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps triumphed over the La Verne Leopards 3-2 Wednesday evening in overtime. In the 94th minute, Maddie Shove  was tackled inside the box, lined up for a penalty kick and struck the ball hard into the back of the net giving the Athenas their fourth victory of the season.  CMS is 4-2-2 overall while La Verne dropped to 2-5-2.

The game heavily favored CMS throughout the first half. Shaundra Ullman scored a goal in the fifth minute off a cross from Shove to give the Athenas an early lead that they would hold all the way into halftime. McKenna Gooden answered for the Leos in the 65th minute, however, when she sent a long, high arcing ball towards CMS keeper Hannah Dunham. It tipped off of Dunham's hands and into the net, making it 1-1.

Just five minutes later, Ullman answered with her second goal of the game, putting the Athenas back on top 2-1. With five minutes left, however, there was some confusion in the CMS defense that led to several La Verne players being left onside and a ball popped through to Krystal Gutierrez who scored on the breakaway to send the game to overtime.

After her golden goal, Maddie Shove and Shaundra Ullman now share the team lead in goals (each has 4 respectively), and have shown leadership in key games early in 2011 conference play.

With the victory the Athenas improved to 4-1 in SCIAC play, while the Leopards dropped to 1-4. CMS will take on Redlands on Saturday at home beginning at 11:00 am.
