CMS Defeats Redlands In Battle For First Place

On Wednesday October 21, second place CMS took on SCIAC leader University of Redlands at Pritzlaff Field. Both teams came out on fire, fighting for the top spot in the conference. The teams were struggling to connect and find quality chances on goal when in the middle of the first half Carolyn Campbell (JR, Irvine CA) out jumped her defender to score on a beautiful cross from Laura Hagen (JR, Bellevue WA). With momentum going their way, the Athenas continued to dominate the first half. In the last five minutes of the half, Kirsten McAfee (JR, Albuquerque NM [pictured]) floated a ball over the keeper's head after a set piece to put the Athenas up by two. In the second half, the Bulldogs came out ready for revenge and scored within the first 30 seconds. The rest of the game was a constant battle with some quality opportunities for both teams, but CMS held onto the lead and took over the top spot in SCIAC with a 2-1 final score.  CMS is now 9-0-2 overall and 7-0-2 in SCIAC while Redlands is 9-5 and 7-2 in SCIAC with both losses coming to the Athenas.

CMS' next game is at home against Whittier College on Saturday, October 24.  Game time is 11:00.
