Athenas Defeat Oles In Overtime

Laura Hagen (SO, Bellevue, WA [pictured]) scored her second goal of the game four minutes into the second overtime to give CMS a 2-1 win over visiting St. Olaf College.  The goal, at the end of a grueling week, successfully closed out the team's third straight win.  The game began with a close battle in the biting cold that remained fairly even throughout the first few minutes. However, the Athenas' high pressure soon paid off, with a well-placed header by Kirsten McAfee (SO, Albuquerque, NM) to Hagen, who immediately found the back of the net. The game was tied up four minutes later when CMS was called for a handball in the box which led to a successful penalty kick for the Oles.

The second half was exciting, yet neither team could find a goal as the minutes were winding down. The Athenas, however, notably out-shot the Oles and Lindsay Delp (FR, Yakima, WA) displayed some key saves that sent the Athenas safely into overtime tied at 1-1. The first ten minute overtime brought the same result, and the prospects of a win were looking grim for both teams. The Athenas refused to let down though and in the middle of the second overtime the hard work and effort finally paid off.  Nicole Sady-Kennedy (JR, Ladera Ranch) fed Hagen, who finished from six yards out and the golden goal won the game.

This win improved the Athenas to 8-4 overall.  They currently hold first place in the SCIAC with a 5-1 record.  CMS begins the second round of SCIAC play at home on Wednesday, October 15.  They host Whittier College at 7:00 on Pritzlaff Field.
