Athenas Double Up On Banana Slugs
CMS beat the visting Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz 4-2 on Friday afternoon. The Athenas scored just two minutes into the contest and twice more midway through the first half and went on to the solid victory. CMS improved to 7-4 overall while UC Santa Cruz fell to 6-5-1. CMS plays the second of their non-conference matches this weekend on Sunday night at 7:00 pm against St. Olaf College.
The Athenas started the game with a quick goal by Giselle Galanto (JR, Duarte [pictured]) in the second minute. Her shot from 30 yards out hit the cross bar and then was deflected into the net by UCSC's own keeper. Santa Cruz immediately pressured the Athenas with several shots and plays in front of their goal. CMS regained their offensive rhythm and converted another goal in the 22nd minute. Laura Hagen (SO, Bellevue, WA) sent one past the keeper from 10 yards out after receiving a pass given from Nicole Sady-Kennedy (JR, Ladera Ranch). One minute later Hagen sent a through ball down the left side to Galanto who scored from just outside the 18-yard box. Before the half was over, UCSC converted one of their shots in the 42nd minute to cut the CMS lead to only two goals. Eleven minutes into the second half, Galanto received a pass and laid it off to Brittney Watson (SR, Sammamish, WA) who then put the Athena's fourth goal of the match into the back of the net. UC Santa Cruz continued pressuring CMS' defense, and in the 66th minute, they were able to slip one into the goal after a free kick was awarded to them 20 yards out. A great defensive effort was put forward by Camila Friedman-Gerlicz (JR, Sante Fe, NM) and company to prevent any more goals from being scored. The match ended with a score of 4-2.
