Athenas Shutout Tigers
On Wednesday evening, the Athenas soccer team defeated the Occidental Tigers 1-0 to secure a position in the SCIAC Conference Tournament. CMS improved to 10-7 and 7-4 (2nd) in SCIAC.
The game was a hard fought battle from both teams, but the Athenas high intensity and determination resulted in a pivotal win for CMS. The score was tied at halftime, but the relentless pressure from the Athenas eventually produced a goal in the 17th minute of the second half. Giselle Galanto (JR, Duarte [pictured]) chased down a ball that was played right outside the penalty box by Brittney Watson (SR, Sammamish, WA), challenged the Occidental keeper, took one touch around her, and calmly placed the ball in the back of the net. With a little less than 30 minutes remaining, the Athenas continued to work as a team, take shots, and defend their 1-0 lead. Goalkeeper Camila Friedman-Gerlicz (JR, Santa Fe, NM) played another phenomenal game for the Athenas, making key saves in both halves to ensure that CMS maintained their shutout.
With one game left in their season, the CMS will play at Redlands on Saturday to battle for first place in the SCIAC Conference. If CMS wins, they will tie Redlands for first and be the number one seed at the SCIAC Tournament. A tie will leave them in second place and the number two seed. A loss will place them second or third and the number two or three seed depending on the results of the other SCIAC games.
