Goldhammer Retires As Track & Field Coach
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ John Goldhammer has announced his resignation from his position as head men’s and women’s track & field coach effective at the end of the 2009-10 academic year. He will continue to serve as head men’s and women’s cross country coach and as associate athletic director.
Goldhammer leaves an impressive legacy for the track & field program. Prior to his hiring in 1984, the men’s and women’s teams combined had only finished as high as second in the SCIAC twice and only had 27 SCIAC Champions. Under Goldhammer, each team finished second five times prior to winning their initial conference championship. The men won their first title in 1992 and have won every title since. Their 19 consecutive titles is one of the longest active streaks in the nation in any sport or division. The women won their first title in 1995 and have won 10 of the 15 titles since. In his 27 seasons, he has coached 276 SCIAC Champions. In addition, 68 of his athletes have earned 103 All-American honors including winning eight individual National Championships.
Now concentrating his focus on the cross country teams alone, he will look to continue the tremendous success those programs have had. The teams have combined to win 27 SCIAC titles under his tutelage and have produced 17 All-Americans. The teams have competed at the NCAA Championships 20 times with both teams competing each of the last two years.
