Track & Field Competes At Cal/Nev Championships

The Stags and Athenas competed at the California-Nevada State Championships at UCLA this weekend.  In the multi-divisional meet, the Stags had three top placers and scored 16 points which was good for 17th place.  Point-scorers for the Stags were Warren Brown–Pounds (SR, Bow, WA) with his 16-0¾  jump in the pole vault which placed him fifth, Taylor Berliant (JR, Sudbury, MA) who spun the hammer out to 190-5 for a fourth place finish and Florian Scheulen (SR, Encinitas) who placed fifth in the steeplechase while establishing a personal best of 9:24.88.  All three marks are NCAA qualifying marks and another one was achieved by Grant Heffernan (JR, Irvine) with his personal best throw of 50-9¼  in the shot put.

Although the Athenas were just off placing, they had several good performances nonetheless lead by Carmen Lundell’s (FR, Wayzata, MN) two second personal best in the 400 hurdles of 65.74 clocking.  Her time moved her up the CMS top 10 list to #6 and the second fastest freshman in the program’s history.  The 4 x 100 relay clocked its yearly best time recording a 49.82 and running under 50 seconds for the first time this year.  The big difference on the relay this year according to head coach John Goldhammer is the addition of Lundell and freshman Madeline Sheldon (Bainbridge Island, WA) who run the first and second legs on the team.

Next up for CMS is a SCIAC quadrangular meet hosted by the University of Redlands.  The team will compete against Caltech and Redlands in a meet which will also include Cal Lutheran.  The starting time is set for 11 am at Ted Runner Stadium in Redlands.
