Stags, Athenas set 34 PR’s at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational

34 personal bests and four NCAA Qualifying Marks highlighted the fantastic performance by the CMS Track & Field team at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational held last Saturday, April 10.

For the Stags, two athletes were able to set PR’s in two different events: Ryan Pittman (SR, Ashland, OR) set a PR in the 100M at 11.54 and 110HH at 15.81, while Jon Hubbard (SR, Pasadena) ran a sub 23-second 200M (22.93) and a lead-off split of 49.70 in the 4x400 relay.

Freshman Rafer Dannenhauer (Shutesbury, MA [pictured left]) ran the second best 5K ever by a CMS frosh by running 15:08.76 and almost surpassed his 2-mile PR from last year by running 9:46.

In the 200M, Mike Carroll (SO, Petaluma) and Jeff Macdonald (FR, Arcadia) both set PR’s at 22.10 and 22.28, respectively.

Dan Olmsted (JR, Ventura) sprinted to a 55.27 in the 400M, while Ryan Weaver (JR Monument, CO) followed closely at 56.47. Shane Kunselman (FR, Ann Arbor, MI) dropped down in distance to run two PRs: a 51.83 in the 400M open as well as a 51.20 split in the mile relay.

Seven Stags also set personal bests in the 1500M: Brian Sutter (FR, Monroe, WA) finished the day with a 4:03.83, Matt Cummins (JR, Riverside) shaved 12 seconds off his time with a 4:03.88, Quinn Chasan (FR, Mercer Island, WA) ran a 4:04.46, Tim Baffi (FR, Moraga) 4:07.50, Russell Page (FR, Albuquerque, NM) 4:17.20, and both Kurtis Twins, Matt and Alex (SR, Bellingham, WA), ran a 4:22.45 and 4:30.11.

In the steeplechase, Florian Scheulen (SR, Encinitas) ran a 9:23.12, which was just over a second past his best time this year.

In the field events, Chris Gage (FR, Olympia, WA) spun the hammer 160'.

Breanna Deutsch (SO, Sammamish, WA [pictured right]) led the Athenas by shaving a 20 second off her personal best in the 5000M; placing second in the race (the highest placed Athena in the entire meet) and out-kicking Occidental’s best runner over the last 150M to record an 18:02.78.

In addition to Deutsch’s performance, two women ran PRs in the 800M: Laura Wyatt (FR, La Jolla) 2:20.39 and Courtney Funk (SR, Sutter Creek) 2:26.06. 

Rebecca Young  (SO, Dulles, VA) ran “the single best race of the year” according to Coach Goldhammer by running a fantastic 400 hurdle race and decreasing her personal best by three seconds.

In the low hurdles, Carmen Lundell (FR, Wayzata, MN) improved by another .8 seconds by running 64.26, while Young improved her personal best by three seconds with a 64.84.

Jessica Dang (FR, Temple City) cleared 10-6 in the pole vault, which added 4” to her personal best and moved her to #6 All-Time for CMS.

In the field events, Catye Cantrall (SO, The Woodlands, TX) chucked the spear 103-1, which added two feet to her personal best and Bonny Guang (SO, Newton, MA) hit 32-2 in the shot.

The CMS squad will travel to Occidental on Saturday, April 17 for a meet against Occidental, Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer.
