Stags Win 18th Straight Title, Athenas Win 11th Overall Title
The men's and women's track & field teams both finished first at the SCIAC Championships at Occidental on Monday. This was the Stags' 18th straight title and the women's 11th title in the last 15 years. The men scored 234.3 points to win by 124.3 and the women scored 175 to win by 71.5. Following the meet Jeff Clark (SR, Los Altos) was named SCIAC Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
CMS added 10 event wins to the five the team picked up on Saturday. Clark added the high jump (6-6.75) and triple jump (47-3) titles to the long jump title he won on Saturday. He was the only three event winner in the meet and now has five titles in his career including three high jump crowns. Stephen Powell (SO, San Jose) continued the CMS dominance in the throws winning the discus throw (152-6) as CMS went one-two-four. Kris Brown (SO, Seattle, WA) powered away on the last lap of the 5000 meters (14:54.06) for the victory. Matt Ezer (SR, Honolulu, HI) won the 200 meters (22.07) and anchored the 4 x 100 relay team [Jon Hubbard (JR, Pasadena)-Mike Carroll (FR, Petaluma)-Noah Goldberg (SR, Seattle, WA)] to a win for the second time in three years. Katie Harris (SR, Bremerton, WA) won the 1500 meters (4:41.03) with a nine-second personal best. Aubrey Doede (SO, La Jolla) won the high jump (5-1) and Reny Colton (FR, Glendale) won the triple jump (37-5.75). The 4 x 400 relay team of Lily Brown (SO, Newton, MA)-Rachel Bunting (FR, Eugene, OR)-Rebecca Young (FY, Dulles, VA)-Kelsey Rose (JR, Irvine) capped the team win for the Athenas with a win in 3:59.26. Saturday's winners included Clark, Taylor Berliant (SO, Sudbury, MA) in the shot put and hammer throw, Warren Brown-Pounds (JR, Bow, WA) in the pole vault and Evelyn Ross (SR, Iowa City, IA) in the steeplechase.
SCIAC Runner-Ups included Noah Franz (JR, La Habra Heights) and Maggie Crank (SR, Albuquerque, NM) in the discus throw, Joey Anderson (FR, Lafayette) in the 110 and 400 hurdles, Bunting in the 400 meters, Harris in the 800 meters, Brian Kopczynski (SO, Coto de Caza) and Ross in the 5000 meters and the men's 4 x 400 relay team of Hubbard-Carroll-Dan Olmsted (SO, Ventura)-Ezer. Saturday's runner-ups included Franz and Mary Moore (SR, Yamhill, OR) in the hammer, Moore and Andrew Bogrand (SR, Portland, OR) in the javelin, Powell in the shot put, Melia Plotkin (FR, San Diego) in the pole vault and Kopczynski in the steeplechase.
CMS was the only school, men or women, to score in all 19 events and both the Stags and Athenas accomplished the feat. All four event areas contributed significantly to the win. The sprinter/hurdlers scored 101 points (57 men-42 women), the distance runners 111 (52-59), the jumpers 82.3 (45.3-37) and the throwers 117 (80-37). The teams combined for 15 firsts, 16 seconds, 11 thirds, 11 fourths, eight fifths and eight sixths. 41 athletes scored points for the team.
