Stags And Athenas Finish 7-0 At SCIAC Multi-Duals

The CMS senior class completed an undefeated career in SCIAC dual meets as both the Stags and Athenas finished 7-0 at the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet at Whittier on Saturday.  This the fifth straight year the men and fourth straight year the women have finished 7-0 in the meet.

The Stags dominated the competition winning 12 of the 19 events including all eight field events.  Multiple event winners included Jeff Clark (SR, Los Altos [pictured left]) in the high, long and triple jumps, Taylor Berliant (SO, Sudbury, MA) in the shot put and hammer throw and Matt Ezer (SR, Honolulu, HI) in the 100 and 200 meters.  Other event winners included Brian Kopczynski (SO, Coto de Caza) in the steeplechase, Kris Brown (SO, Seattle, WA) in the 5000 meters, Matt Streshinsky (SO, Laguna Niguel) in the pole vault, Grant Heffernan (SO, Newport Beach) in the discus throw and Andrew Bogrand (SR, Portland, OR) in the javelin throw.  Six of the winners set personal bests in winning including Clark (LJ 22-9), Berliant (SP 50-7.5), Ezer (100 10.91 & 200 22.05), Kopczynski (9:26.83), Streshinsky (15-0) and Heffernan (NCAA qualifying mark of 160-10).  CMS also had four second and eight third place finishes.

The women's competition was more competitive and the Athenas pulled out a win in their closest meet with Cal Lutheran (84-75) by winning the final running event, the 4 x 400 relay.  In addition to the relay of Lily Brown (SO, Newton, MA), Kelsey Rose (JR, Irvine), Rebecca Young (FY, Dulles, VA) and Rachel Bunting (FR, Eugene, OR), additional winners for the women included Evelyn Ross (SR, Iowa City, IA) in the 5000 meters, Aubrey Doede (SO, La Jolla) in the high jump and Maggie Crank (SR, Albuquerque, NM [pictured right]) in the discus throw.  CMS also had five second and one third place finish.  Top performances included Crank's personal best in the discus (132-10) and Reny Colton's (FR, Glendale) personal best in the triple jump (NCAA qualifying mark of 37-7.25).

CMS will have about half of the team compete this Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific as the team prepares for the SCIAC Championships.  The championship meet will take place at Occidental College on Saturday, April 25 and Monday, April 27.
