2010 CMS Stags Tennis Season in Review
2010 was another banner year for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Tennis Program, with the Stags taking the third place trophy at the NCAA Division III Team Championship in Oberlin, Ohio in May. The Stags' season was one filled with team and individual accolades: a fifth consecutive undefeated conference title, a second top three national finish in the past three years, ITA All-Academic Team honors, an ITA singles title, an Ojai doubles title, and two ITA All-American awards.

Stags Take 3rd at NCAAs With Win Over Wash U
CMS Men's Tennis won the 3rd Place Match at the NCAA Team Championships in Oberlin, OH on Thursday, as they defeated #7 Washington University in St. Louis 5-2. The Stags won two of three doubles for the first time in three days, and then held on for singles victories at #2, #5, and #6 to clinch the dual match. CMS finishes #3 in the nation for the second time in the last three years.

Stags Fall 5-4 in NCAA Semis
CMS Men's Tennis lost a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to #5 Amherst in the NCAA Team Championship Semifinals on Wednesday. Senior Captain Mikey LIm (Honolulu, HI [pictured right]) won at #2 singles and #3 doubles in an effort that put the Stags within a point of advancing to the final.

CMS Into NCAA Final Four With 5-2 Win Over Trinity
Senior Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA [pictured right]) won at #2 doubles and got the match clinching victory at #3 singles to lead the Stags to a 5-2 win over #13 Trinity, TX in the NCAA Team Championships Quarterfinals on Tuesday. CMS fought back from a 2-1 deficit after the doubles, winning at #2, #3, #5, and #6 singles to earn a spot in the Division III Final Four. The Stags will play #5 Amherst in the semifinals at 1:00 PM EST on Wednesday.

Men's Tennis Wins Regional - On to NCAA Elite 8
CMS Men's Tennis defeated #6 UC Santa Cruz 5-3 on Friday to win the West Regional and advance to the quarterfinals of NCAA Division III Men's Team Championships. The Stags staged a dramatic comeback in doubles play to take a 2-1 lead, and then won at #4, #5, and #6 singles to clinch the match. CMS advances to the NCAA quarterfinals, to be played in Oberlin, Ohio May 25-27.

Stags Advance to Regional Final Against Santa Cruz
CMS Men's Tennis earned a 5-0 win over #22 Whitman to advance to the 3rd Round of the NCAA Team Championships. The Stags will face West Region rival UC Santa Cruz, ranked #6, who upset #4 Cal Lutheran by a 5-2 score on Thursday. CMS and UC Santa Cruz will meet for the second time this season on Friday at 1:00 PM, to determine who will advance to the final eight in Oberlin, Ohio, May 25-27.

Stags Close Out Regular Season With Win at Point Loma
CMS Men's Tennis picked up its 20th win of the season in a 5-4 victory over Point Loma Nazarene on Friday. Sophomore Robbie Erani (New York, NY [pictured right]) won at #1 singles and #1 doubles to lead the Stags against the 12th ranked Sea Lions. Erani's two tie-break singles win was also his twentieth of the season.

Stags Move To #3 in National D3 Rankings
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has ranked CMS Men's Tennis #3 in its Division III national rankings as of April 29. The Stags are behind #1 Middlebury, and #2 Emory in the national rankings, after moving up from #5 as of March 30, and #4 as of April 13. CMS is the #1 ranked Division III team in the West Region.

Men's Tennis Falls to Cougars
Freshman Alex Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA [pictured right]) completed a red hot April with a straight set win against Azusa Pacific on Friday. Johnson, playing at #5 singles, accounted for the Stags' only singles win of the afternoon, as CMS fell to APU 7-2. Johnson completed April with a 6-1 singles record and the loss of only two sets.

Eric MacColl and Harmony Palmer have been selected SCIAC Athletes of the week for the week of April 19-25.

MacColl-Wei Win All-CMS Ojai Final
Brandon Wei (So. – Lake Oswego, OR) and Eric MacColl (Sr. - Greenbrae, CA) won the Ojai Division III doubles title by defeating teammates Ronald Wu (Jr. – Los Altos, CA) and Robbie Erani (So. – New York, NY), in the first all-CMS Ojai doubles final ever. MacColl and Wei become the third CMS doubles team since 2004 to win the Ojai crown, and the first unseeded team to do so. MacColl, playing in his final Ojai tournament, also reached the semifinals of the singles, winning nine of ten singles and doubles matches in three days.

CMS Wins 5th Straight Title
CMS Men's Tennis captured it's fifth consecutive outright SCIAC championship on Saturday by defeating 5th ranked Cal Lutheran 6-3 at the Upland Tennis Club. The Stags were led by seniors Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI) and Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA) who had two wins each in CMS' second win over the Kingsmen in a week. CMS completes conference play with a perfect 8-0 record and extends their SCIAC unbeaten streak to 49 matches over the past five seasons.

Stags Advance to Conference Championship
CMS' Russell Brockett (Jr. - Austin, TX [pictured right]) was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at #3 singles to lead the Stags to an 8-1 win at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday. CMS advances to the SCIAC tournament title match for the fifth consecutive year and will play fifth ranked Cal Lutheran at the Upland Tennis Club on Saturday.

Stags Earn Top Seed at SCIACs with Win Over #4 Cal Lu
CMS Men's Tennis closed out conference play with a 6-3 win over #4 Cal Lutheran, earning the Stags a top seed and bye in the SCIAC tournament which begins next Friday. CMS was led by senior and Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA [pictured right]) who won at #3 singles and doubles. CMS has now won the conference regular season for the fifth consecutive year and extends its conference unbeaten streak to 47 matches.

Men's Tennis Shuts Out Pomona-Pitzer 9-0
CMS Men's Tennis moved to 5-0 in conference play and 16-4 overall, with a 9-0 shutout at #22 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. A doubles sweep led by #3 team Russell Brockett (Jr. - Austin, TX) and Mac Cahill (Fr. - Southport, CT)[pictured right] got the Stags ahead for good against their cross-campus rivals.

Stags Stay Undefeated in SCIAC, Win at Redlands
CMS Men’s Tennis extended its program best conference unbeaten streak to 45 matches with a 7-2 win at 18th ranked Redlands on Friday. Mac Cahill (Fr. - Southport, CT [pictured right]) was part of a singles sweep by the Stags, winning his third match in a row and eleventh on the year at the #6 position.

Men's Tennis Tops Gustavus 9-0
Junior Russell Brockett (Austin, TX [pictured right]) won at #1 singles and #2 doubles to lead CMS to its fifth win over a nationally ranked team in the month of March, as the Stags defeated #25 Gustavus Adolphus by 9-0 score on Tuesday night at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

#4 Middlebury Too Much For Stags
Sophomore Robbie Erani (New York, NY) provided the Stags’ only win on Friday, as CMS was beaten 7-2 by a very tough 4th ranked Middlebury team. Erani’s win at #1 singles against Middlebury’s Andrew Peters, avenged a loss to Peters at the ITA Small College National Championships last October. Erani is now 17-2 on the season at the #1 position

CMS Men’s won a crucial West Region match-up against top ranked UC Santa Cruz on Thursday night, sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets to seal an 8-1 victory. Senior Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA [pictured right]) won at #3 doubles and #3 singles, to lead CMS to their most lopsided victory ever, and first at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, against UC Santa Cruz.

CMS Men’s Tennis continued it’s strong out of conference play with an impressive 7-2 win over 20th ranked Bowdoin College. Senior Captain Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI [pictured right]) came back from a frustrating loss at #1 doubles to clinch the dual match with his tenth win of the season at #2 singles.

In one of a handful of March matches against top ten Division III teams, the 5th ranked CMS Stags tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to #10 Amherst on Saturday. Junior Ronald Wu (Los Altos, CA [pictured right]) was one of two Stags to earn singles wins, with his 6-1, 6-4 victory at #6.

Stags Win Three in Convincing Fashion
Eighteen Stags took the court on Thursday as part of a rare triple-header, with CMS defeating Skidmore, Goucher, and the University of the South. Senior Myles Crandall (Tucson, AZ [pictured right]) remained perfect in dual match play this spring with victories at #1 doubles and #2 singles in the 9-0 victory over Goucher.

Men’s Tennis Blanks #13 Trinity
CMS won its second match against a nationally ranked opponent in as many days, as the Stags used aggressive doubles play to overwhelm 13th ranked Trinity University 9-0. Led by the senior pair [pictured right] Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI) and Thomas Keiffer (La Jolla, CA) at #1 doubles, CMS swept the doubles and then held on for a shut-out at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Thursday night.

Stags Take Out #9 Carnegie Mellon 7-2
In their first test against a nationally ranked Division III opponent, CMS Stags Tennis dominated #9 Carnegie Mellon 7-2 on Wednesday night. CMS got it’s leadership from the top, with #1 singles player Robbie Erani (So. – New York, NY [pictured right]) getting two convincing wins.

Men’s Tennis Wins Two, Extends Streak
Freshman Mac Cahill (Southport, CT [pictured right]) earned victories at #1 singles and #1 doubles, as the Stags moved to 3-0 in the SCIAC with a 9-0 win over Occidental on Sunday. The win extends CMS’ conference win streak to 44. After traveling to Burbank to play the Tigers in a make-up of Saturday’s rained out league contest, CMS then returned home to defeat Division II Cal Poly Pomona 8-1 in the afternoon.

Stags Drop Close One to Westmont; Easily Defeat Chapman
Westmont College – ranked 21st in NAIA – narrowly edged the Stags in the first half of a Saturday double header by a 5-4 margin. It was the second match against a nationally ranked small college program in as many weeks for the Stags. CMS then came back to defeat Division III regional opponent Chapman University 9-0 in a late afternoon match.

Men’s Tennis Wins 9-0 at Whittier
CMS Men’s Tennis moved to 2-0 in SCIAC with a 9-0 victory at Whittier on Friday. After sweeping the doubles, the Stags won in straight sets at all six singles positions. Freshmen Alex Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) and Sam Wong (Palo Alto, CA), and sophomore Ethan Bond (Beverly Hills, CA) led CMS by yielding a combined five games at #3, #4, and #6 singles.

Stags Defeat Caltech, Fall to Hawaii Pacific in Home Openers
CMS Men’s Tennis opened its 2010 dual match campaign with a Parents Weekend double header at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday. The Stags defeated Caltech 9-0 before falling 6-3 to fifth ranked Division II opponent Hawaii Pacific.

UC Santa Cruz edged the Stags 3-2 in the championship match of the inaugural D3 Alumni Challenge at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday. The event featured alums from Cal Lutheran, CMS, Redlands, and UC Santa Cruz competing against one another.

The 2010 Stags won their second consecutive Ducey Cup Alumni Match by a 5-4 score in nine 8-game pro-set doubles matches. Robbie Erani (So - New York, NY) and Ronald Wu (Jr. - Los Altos, CA) led the Stags with an impressive win over recent alums Lawrence Wang (CMC '09) and Ben Hough (CMC '08)

The Stags are #5 nationally and #2 in the West Region in the Division III Campbell / ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings released November 10. CMS also had six (6) players earning regional and / or national rankings based on another strong fall season.

Ryan McKee Inducted into CMS Hall of Fame
Ryan McKee (CMC ’93) became the seventh Stags Tennis inductee into the CMS Hall of Fame on Saturday night. McKee – who was introduced by basketball teammate and 2008 Hall inductee Chris Greene – was a two-sport standout in tennis and basketball at CMS.

Erani Wins ITA West Region Singles Title
Sophomore Robbie Erani (New York, NY) won the Wilson / ITA Division III West Region singles title on Sunday, defeating top seeded Andrew Giuffrida of Cal Lutheran 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in the final. Erani advances to the ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, AL October 15-18 and earns ITA All-American honors for his title.
